Harper likes being in power so much, he renamed ‘The Government of Canada’ to ‘The Harper Government’. Creepy right?

It’s not about who is “better”, it is about creating change. Canadian’s do not care about their government anymore. We need to keep our government on their toes by getting involved and questioning their actions. If not we end up with men who are abiding by their own agendas not what is best for our country.

Stephen Harper has been doing things his way for a long time. He has screwed up our educational system well before he was Prime Minister. As Prime Minister he has closed parliament for two months without consent to avoid inquiries about Afghan detainees, stall government bills and allowing the Conservatives to take over parliament; turned UN voters against Canada causing us to no longer be one of the countries represented in the UN; and don’t get me started on the Economic Action Plan, that is costing us 26million dollars and is still running despite the fact that the program is now over.

There might not be a better choice, but we cannot allow our government to get comfortable. Most Canadians are more interested in American politics, then what is going on in their own back yards. I feel this is because there are no “great politicians” in Canada anymore. We have one man who badmouths us behind our backs; one man who looks friendly at first glance but screws us over when we aren’t looking; one man who is trying to ride on the lies of other parties; and one man who is a complete joke.

If Canadian regained their passion for their country and voiced their opinions, no matter what they are. We might finally encourage our political parties to become more responsible for the actions.

We have become apathetic, and instead of complaining we need to start participating. To quote Rick Mercer (one of the few people who is keeping all of the political parties on their toes), “People just don’t care. Apparently our opinion of politics and the people who practice the art is now so low that no matter what the behaviour we’re no longer surprised. It’s like going to a family wedding. Why bother getting upset because uncle Jerry has too much to drink and makes a holy show of himself out on the dance floor? It’s uncle Jerry, that’s what he does.”

Cold Fish: An aloof unemotional person lack of libido

This series plays on our need to communicate our sexual identity through our clothing. Visually, these images
deconstruct the idea that a body without clothing is not appetizing.

Included are photographs of individuals and couples posing nude behind their frozen undergarments thereby
creating interesting and unusual visual dialogues. The underwear expresses that we rely on articles of clothing to
express our sexual persona. By creating this juxtaposition, the project proposes that, when stripped bare, we
become “cold fish”. Society’s unquenchable thirst for visual stimulation pushes the boundaries of the fashion
industry.

Stephanie Kloibhofer – Artists Wanted 2010.

Since the completion of my thesis paper in August 2009, MP Jason Kenny has fast tracked the applications for the adoption of Haitian orphans since the earthquake that occurred in Haiti on January 12th, 2010. Even though Kenney’s has loosened the adoption laws to help 156 Haitian children who were in the process of being adopted when the earthquake occurred, there are still many children and other Haitians citizens who are unable to immigrate Canada.

The refusal to relax immigration standards for the victims of Haiti has caused Kenney and the federal government to be fiercely criticized by both the Liberal party and the Haitian community within Canada. As it stands individuals who can be sponsored by family members for immigration status include parents, spouses, children and grandparents. Quebec’s immigration minister Yolande James is one of many people who disagree with Kenney’s decision. Fortunately, Quebec has a clause within its agreement with the federal government, which James has utilized to relax the provincial standards on immigration. Kenney’s only response to James refusal to follow with the federal government’s decision was, “Quebec has the right to choose who immigrates to their province…Ottawa will not alter its definition of family or increase the quota for permanent residents in Quebec.”

In light of Kenney and the federal government’s reaction to the tragedy in Haiti and Kenney’s unyielding desire to maintain a “tight the definition of what it means to be Canadian,” I have found a complexity that demands further research. I feel that now more than ever that I can maintain the relevance of my project and that in order to do so there is significantly more work to be done.

I hope to use this blog to help present and explain my photographic documentary titled, “We don’t need the state to promote diversity.” This blog will become an ongoing addition to my project; questioning what a “Canadian” is; how blended our culture has become; and attempting to find people who have immigrated to Canada from every country in the world, to help tell their stories of why they choose to make Canada their home.

Within the project “We don’t need the State to Promote Diversity,” Canadian citizens, both young and old, are photographed representing ideas of Canadian identities and representations of their ethnic backgrounds, critiquing MP Jason Kenny’s recent quest to “tighten the definition of what it means to be Canadian.”

The subject’s portraits will display their choice in representing their ethnic background and a Canadian persona that they or any Canadian citizen can relate to. At this stage with my project I have used photographs of 26 subjects demonstrating the diverse backgrounds of people living within Canada.  As the documentary photographer directing the project, I am enabling each participant to portray their own understanding of their cultural ethnicity. Overall, my project explores our multicultural society, which supports its citizens to embrace their Canadian and ethnic cultures, regardless of the pressures some government officials place on them to conform.
